Cristiano Ronaldo's Champions League Career: A Statistical Analysis
Cristiano Ronaldo's UEFA Champions League career is defined by goals, memorable performances, and success in the competition's biggest matches. However, his career can be examined through more than his overall goal tally. By analyzing his match-by-match statistics, we can explore which rounds and opponents feature most prominently in his scoring record, examine his standout individual performances, and compare his results across different stages of the competition.
This analysis uses the match logs recorded in The Ronaldo Archive to investigate several aspects of Ronaldo's Champions League career, from his goalscoring record to his dribbling, chance creation, and team results.
1. Goals by Round
The Champions League progresses through several stages, from the group stage to the knockout rounds and final. This visualization breaks down Ronaldo's recorded goals by competition round.

Cristiano Ronaldo has played in 183 UEFA Champions league matches, scoring 140 goals. The chart above shows how those goals are distributed across the competition's stages. In 98 group stage matches, he scored 73 goals, while in 85 knockout matches, he scored 67 goals. 25 goals in the round of 16 and the quarterfinals, 13 goals in semifinals, and 6 goals in finals. He is the top scorer in quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals.
2. Favorite Opponents
Ronaldo has faced numerous European clubs throughout his Champions League career. This visualization identifies the ten opponents against whom he has scored the most goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo's favorite opponent is Juventus, against whom he has scored 10 goals. Ajax and Bayern Munich are tied for second place with 9 goals each, followed by Atletico Madrid, Dortmund, and Schalke with 7 goals each. Impressively, all 9 of his goals against Bayern Munich were either in the quarterfinals or semifinals.
Results Against His Most-Faced Opponents
Goal totals show how frequently Ronaldo scored against an opponent, but they do not explain how often his team won those matches. This visualization examines the recorded wins, draws, and losses against the ten opponents he faced most frequently.

Cristiano Ronaldo has a strong record against his most-faced opponents. It is important to note that this chart counts individual matches, not two-legged knockout ties. Also, games that end in a draw after 90/120 minutes are counted as draws, even if a team advanced on penalties. Otherwise, Ronaldo would have seven wins against Atletico Madrid instead of five.
3. Man of the Match Performances
Goals are only one way to measure an individual performance. Man of the Match awards provide another perspective on Ronaldo's influence across different rounds of the Champions League.

Man of the match awards are calculated by rating apps, as UEFA did not officially start handing physical awards until the 2019/20 knockout stages. According to rating apps, Ronaldo has been named Man of the Match 45 times in the Champions League. He has received 25 awards in the group stage, 10 in the round of 16, 7 in the quarterfinals, and 2 in the semifinals.
4. Standout Individual Performances
Career totals can hide the details of individual matches. Looking at single-match statistics allows us to identify some of Ronaldo's most productive performances in specific areas of his game.
Successful Dribbling
This visualization identifies the five Champions League matches with the highest recorded number of successful dribbles by Ronaldo.

The above chart shows the five matches in which Ronaldo recorded the most successful dribbles. Benfica appears twice, both games occurring a year apart, and both being away fixtures. It is important to note that Cristiano Ronaldo completed 14 out of 20 dribbles that game, as recorded by Opta, rather than the 20 he is mistakenly credited with. The Fenerbahce and Panathinaikos performances go under the radar because they are less known about, but they are still impressive. Roma is the only opponent from the knockout stage that appears here, in which Manchester United lost 2-1. The second leg, however, resulted in a 7-1 dedmolition of Roma, in which Ronaldo scored a brace and recorded 7 successful dribbles.
Key Passes and Chance Creation
Ronaldo's contribution to an attack is not limited to the final shot or assist. Key passes offer a way to examine matches in which he frequently created opportunities for teammates.

Three of Ronaldo's top five matches by recorded key passes came in the knockout stage. Unfortunately, only one of those games resulted in an assist, which will be discussed later. Also, four of the five games occured in a four-year time frame, specifically when Ronaldo had a more ball-to-feet role than his center forward role under Zidane.
5. How Many Goals Did He Score in a Match?
A career goal total does not show how those goals were distributed across appearances. This visualization counts matches in which Ronaldo scored one, two, three, or four goals.

This shows the goal distribution based on games in which Ronaldo scored exactly 1, 2, 3, and 4 goals. Thus, the graph only shows 7 hat-trick games instead of the correct 8; because one of those games ended in a poker, it was counted separately. The graph shows that Ronaldo scored exactly 1 goal 55 times, a brace 30 times, a hat-trick 7 times, and a poker once.
6. Home vs. Away Scoring
Venue provides another way to examine Ronaldo's scoring record. This visualization compares his home and away goals across Champions League rounds, showing how his output was distributed between the two settings.

Of course, away games are harder to score in. However, it is very impressive that Ronaldo has scored more goals in away group stage games (40) than home (30). In the semifinals, only a goal separates his home and away tally.
7. Win Rate Across Competition Stages
In two-legged knockout rounds, a team advances based on the aggregate score across both matches. This visualization counts each knockout tie once, while group-stage matches are counted individually.

Cristiano Ronaldo has a near-perfect record in the quarterfinal, only being eliminated once in 12 qualifications, when Juventus lost to Ajax in the 2018/19 season. This data also records data at it shows at the end of the 90 or 120 minutes, which is why his final win rate is 50 percent.
Methodology and Limitations
This analysis uses the UEFA Champions League match logs recorded in The Ronaldo Archive. Goals, assists, match results, venue, competition stage, and individual-match statistics are based on the fields available in those records. Some detailed match statistics are not available for every historical appearance, so charts based on successful dribbles, key passes, or Man of the Match awards reflect recorded data and may not cover every match equally.
The win-rate analysis uses two approaches: individual match results and aggregate outcomes for two-legged knockout ties. Penalty-shootout outcomes are not reliably represented in the available fields. When an aggregate score is level, the tie-level analysis classifies the outcome as a draw, even if a team advanced on penalties. This limitation should be considered when interpreting the tie-level win rates. The analysis also depends on the completeness and consistency of the underlying match logs.
